Bible believing, Independent, Fundamental
Saved at the age of 6, Pastor Carfrey felt called to preach as a young boy, preaching his first sermon at the age of 12. His years of ministry include planting two churches, serving as a Chaplain's Assistant in the U.S. Army, and 25 years on the Bible Faculty of Appalachian Bible College.
Dr. Carfrey received his B.A. in Religion from Bob Jones University, his Th.M. from Dallas Theological Seminary, and his D.Min. from Baptist Bible Seminary. He is committed to the Word of God and his passion for the Word is clearly seen through his expository and doctrinal preaching.
Dan is a faithful and loving husband to his wife, Shirley, and a proud father and grandfather. He became the pastor of Piney View Bible Church in 2016.
Piney View Bible Church has a rich history going back to the 1930’s when some people from the community began meeting for Sunday School and occasionally church services in the school building. In 1939 a church building was built and established as a union church with four denominations holding meetings there. In the mid 1950’s the name “Piney View Bible Church” was chosen and a church covenant and constitution were adopted under the leadership of Rev. Carl Johnson who became the first full-time pastor on October 1, 1956. In 1964 Rev. Johnson left to become a full-time evangelist. Rev. Bob Sizemore became pastor for about 8 months followed by Rev. Ralph Green. Rev. Cecil Smith became pastor in February, 1969 and retired after 46 years of faithful service in December 2014. Dr. Daniel Carfrey began as interim pastor in April 2015 and was asked to become the full-time pastor in 2016.
This church, and the members thereof, shall subscribe and adhere to the faith and doctrine set forth in the Holy Scripture, as follows:
SECTION 1. The Bible, including both the Old and the New Testaments, is a divine revelation, wholly inerrant in the original writings, which were verbally inspired by the Holy Spirit (2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Pet. 1:21).
SECTION 2. God is a Person who has revealed Himself as a Trinity in unity; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – three Persons co-eternal in being, co-identical in nature, co-equal in power and yet but one God (Deut. 6:4; Matt. 28:19; 1 Cor. 8:6). 7
SECTION 3. Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God, which is to say, He is Himself very God; He became flesh, being conceived by the Holy Ghost, and born of the Virgin Mary; He died upon the cross as a substitutionary sacrifice providing an unlimited atonement for the sin of the world; He arose from the dead in the body in which He was crucified; He ascended into Heaven in that body glorified, where He is now, our interceding High Priest; He will come again personally and visibly to set up His kingdom and to judge the quick and the dead (Col. 1:15; Phil. 2:5-8; Matt. 1:18-25; 1 Pet. 2:24; Luke 24; Heb. 4:14-16; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Thess. 4:16-18; Matt. 25:31-46; Rev. 11:15-17; 20:4-6; 11-15).
SECTION 4. Man was created in the image of God, but fell into sin, and, in that sense, is lost; this is true of all men, and, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God; salvation is by grace, through faith in Christ, who His own self bore our sins in His own body on the tree; the retribution of the wicked and unbelieving, and the reward of the righteous, are everlasting; and, as the reward is conscious, so is the retribution. The believer in Christ is secure, not because of his ability to endure, but because of the finished work of Christ and the keeping power of God. There will be a bodily resurrection of all men, saved and unsaved. The saved will be resurrected to eternal life. The unsaved will be resurrected to judgment and everlasting punishment. (Gen. 1:26,27; Rom. 3:10,23; John 3:3; Acts 13:38,39; 4:12; John 3:16; Matt. 25:46; 2 Cor. 5:1;2 Thess. 1:7-10; John 10:27-29; Rom. 8:38, 39; 2 Tim. 1:12; 1 Pet. 1:3-5. Matt. 25:46; John 5:28, 29; 11:25, 26; Rev. 20:5, 6, 13).
SECTION 5. The church is an elect company of believers, baptized by the Holy Spirit into one body; its mission is to witness concerning its Head, Jesus Christ, preaching the gospel among all nations; it will be caught up to meet the Lord in the air when He appears to set up His kingdom (Acts 2:41; 15:13-17; Eph. 1:3-6; 1 Cor. 12:12,13; Matt. 28:19,20; Acts 1:6-8; 1 Thess. 4:16-18).
SECTION 6. The ordinances imposed upon the Christian church by the Holy Word of God are baptism and the Lord’s Supper – baptism by immersion as an outward testimony of an inward work of grace in regeneration, and the Lord’s Supper as a memorial of the broken body and shed blood of the Lord Jesus – to be observed until He comes (Matt. 28:19,20; Mark 16:16; Acts 8:36-39; Matt. 26:26-29; Mark 14:22-25; Luke 22:19,20; 1 Cor. 11:23-34).
SECTION 7. God gives spiritual enabling gifts for service to all believers. We believe that the apostolic age of signs and the gifts of healing and tongues ceased with the ministry of the apostles chosen personally by Christ and with the completion of the written Word of God. We believe that speaking in tongues was never the common or necessary sign of the baptism nor of the filling of the Spirit. The gifts which remain are sufficient for the ministry and the perfecting of the Church today. We believe that God does hear and answer the prayer of faith, according to His will, for the sick and afflicted (Rom. 12:6-8; I Cor. 12:4-11; Jam. 5:14, 15).
SECTION 8. The Scripture presents the pre-millennial (1,000 year literal reign of Christ on the earth) return of the Lord Jesus Christ, and this second coming will be a literal, bodily, personal appearance to the earth. This second coming of Christ for His Bride, the Church, precedes the 8 Tribulation and constitutes the “Blessed Hope” set before us, for which we should be constantly looking. (Matt. 24:27, 30, 44; John 14:1–3; 1 Thess. 1:10; 4:13–17; Rev. 19:11–19)
SECTION 9. God established marriage to be between one man and one woman. As a wonderful gift from God, sexual intimacy is to be expressed between a man and woman within the commitment and love of this marital relationship. Therefore, we believe that any other form of sexual intimacy, or any redefining of human genders, is both immoral and a perversion of God’s perfect gift. (Gen. 2:24-25; Prov. 5:18; I Cor. 7:5; I Thess. 4:3-5; Heb. 13:4; Lev. 18:1-30; Prov. 6:32; I Cor. 6:18; Rom. 1:26-27).
SECTION 10. We believe that the first eleven chapters of Genesis are the literal history of the early Earth. We believe that this material universe is the result of a sequence of unique creative acts of God the Son, accomplished with the aid of God the Holy Spirit and directed by God the Father. We believe these creative acts were ex nihilo, completed by the mere spoken commands of God. We further believe that these creative acts were accomplished in six literal twenty-four hour days (Gen. 1:1, 2; Col. 1:16, 2 Pet. 3:5; Exod. 20:11; Gen. 1:31; Gen. 1:27, 2:7-3:19; Gen. 6-8, Gen. 6:5; 1 Pet. 3:6).
